Amélioration de la production d'Artemia dans les salines tunisiennes par fertilisation minérale : détermination de la dose optimale d'emploi. OceanDocs
Hussenot, J.; Aloui, N.; El Abed, A..
In order to test the fertilization effect on Artemia production, six treatments of a mineral fertilization with di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) and urea (0.25*F; 0.5*F; 0.75*F; 1*F; 1.5*F; 2*F with F = 15 mg/L of DAP and 15 mg/L of urea) were compared to a control unfertilized. After the initial fertilization (day 0), a half a dose was brought once a week. At day 8, Artemia nauplii were inoculated in all tanks at the rate of 50 nauplii per liter. Physico-chemical and biological parameters of the culture were analysed each week, during the 48 days of experiment. The results showed that the optimal dose is 0.75*F; it gaves the maximal phytoplanctonic biomass expressed by chlorophyll-a has and it allowed to obtain a maximal production of Artemia (cysts and...

Effects of nutritional requirement of live food organisms on growth and survival of barramundi/seabass Lates calcarifer (Bloch) larvae. ArchiMer
Rimmer, M; Reed, A.
Larvae of barramundi (Lates calcarifer ) reared intensively in some Australian hatcheries have suffered periodic high mortalities which have been ascribed to nutritional deficiencies in the live food organisms used, particularly deficiencies of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Barramundi larvae reared in an experimental system and fed on four diets, representing combinations of supplemented and unsupplemented rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis ) and supplemented and unsupplemented brine shrimp (Artemia salina ). Supplementation of rotifers and brine shrimp with a commercially available microencapsulated diet increased the levels of several polyunsaturated fatty acids in the food organisms.

Enrichment of live foods. ArchiMer
Watanabe, T.
Live foods such rotifers and Artemia are still indispensable for mass propagation of larval fish. At present, more than 20 fish and crustacean species are mass produced in Japanese governmental fish farming centres and private hatcheries. Fry are either released into the coastal areas or used for commercial cultivation. This culture technology is rapidly developing with new species being introduced each year and larval rearing is increasingly identified as the number one constraint. Artemia is used most extensively, particularly for the mass production of Kuruma prawn, Penaeus japonicus .

Influence of different diets on length and biomass production of brine shrimp Artemia franciscana (Kellog, 1906) OceanDocs
García-Ulloa, M.; Gamboa-Delgado, J.; Zabala-Aguirre, J.L.; Ogura-Fujii, T.; Lavens, P..
Total length and biomass production of the brine shrimp Artemia franciscana were studied fed on soybean and wheat micropulverized meals (applied alone or mixed at different proportions), live microalgae (Tetraselmis suecica and Chaetoceros calcitrans), and dried Spirulina as diets. Eight diets were tested in triplicates during 10 days. Significant differences (P < 0.05) were observed from day 1 onwards. The mixed meal-based diets showed better production results. At day 1, the Artemia nauplii fed on the 70% wheat meal/ 30% soya meal diet were 30% longer compared to the animals from the C. calcitrans group. At day 10, the organisms fed with the 100% soya meal diet were 68% longer than those fed on the C. calcitrans diet. The final biomass production (wet...

International study on Artemia : 48. The effect of temperature on cyst hatching larval survival and biomass production for different geographical strains of brine shrimp Artemia spp. OMA
Vanhaecke, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The effect of temperature on different geographical strains of Artemia has been studied for the following criteria: the hatchability of the cysts, the resistance of the larvae to high temperature (34°C) and the biomass production of larvae cultured under standard conditions. Experimental temperatures ranged from 25° to 37°C for the hatching criteria and from 20° to 32.5°C for the biomass production. Both the hatching percentage and growth performance are affected by temperature. However, the relative and quantitative impact of temperature varies widely among Artemia strains. This is also the case for the temperature resistance of the larvae. The impact of increasing temperatures on cyst hatching as well as the...

Microbial control of the culture of Artemia juveniles through preemptive colonization by selected bacterial strains OMA
Verschuere, L.; Rombaut, G.; Huys, G.; Dhont, J.; Sorgeloos, P.; Verstraete, W..
The use of juvenile Artemia as feed in aquaculture and in the pet shop industry has been getting more attention during the last decade. In this study, the use of selected bacterial strains to improve the nutritional value of dry food for Artemia juveniles and to obtain control of the associated microbial community was examined. Nine bacterial strains were selected based on their positive effects on survival and/or growth of Artemia juveniles under monoxenic culture conditions, while other strains caused no significant effect, significantly lower rates of survival and/or growth, or even total mortality of the Artemia . The nine selected strains were used to preemptively colonize the...

New aspects of the use of inert diets for high density culturing of brine shrimp OMA
Dobbeleir, J.; Adam, N.; Bossuyt, E.; Bruggeman, E.; Sorgeloos, P..
Brine shrimp being non-selective filter-feeders, cheap agricultural waste products should be evaluated as potential food sources for their controlled mass culturing. Preliminary results of screening tests performed with wheat bran, soybean meal , rice bran and whey powder in culturing systems of various size are reported. Wheat bran appears to be unsuitable as monodiet for brine shrimp. The other products tested support good growth although specific precautions have to be taken with some foods to avoid problems of water quality during culturing. Processing techniques for the manual or mechanical preparation of inert feeds for Artemia are indicated. The possibility of influencing the fatty acid pattern of cultured brine shrimp by varying...

New developments in the high density flow-through culturing of brine shrimp Artemia OMA
Lavens, P.; Baert, P.; De Meulemeester, A.; Van Ballaer, E.; Sorgeloos, P..
A closed culture system for the high density culturing of Artemia spp. in 300-liter tanks using a new formula of artificial seawater and micronized waste products from agricultural crops as food is described. Culture conditions are greatly improved by applying a new filter technique and an electronic transparency meter which controls food distributions automatically. A total volume of 6,000 liters of culture water recirculated over a rotating biological contactor, a cross-flow sieve and a plate separator at a flow rate of 3000 liters per hour.Production yields obtained with this culture system, when extrapolated to a 1 m³ tank, indicate that 50 g of brine shrimp cysts can be converted into 20 kg of fresh (wet dry) pre-adult...

Report d’une nouvelle population d’Artemia (Branchiopoda, crustacea) en Tunisie : Sabkhet Halk el Menzel OceanDocs
Ben Naceur, H.; Ben Rejeb Jenhani, A.; Romdhane, M .S..

Selected bacterial strains protect Artemia spp. from the pathogenic effects of Vibrio proteolyticus CW8T2 OMA
Verschuere, L.; Heang, H.; Criel, G.R.J.; Sorgeloos, P.; Verstraete, W..
In this study Vibrio proteolyticus CW8T2 has been identified as a virulent pathogen for Artemia spp. Its infection route has been visualized with transmission electron microscopy. The pathogen affected microvilli and gut epithelial cells, disrupted epithelial cell junctions, and reached the body cavity, where it devastated cells and tissues. In vivo antagonism tests showed that pre-emptive colonization of the culture water with nine selected bacterial strains protected Artemia juveniles against the pathogenic effects. Two categories of the selected strains could be distinguished: (i) strains providing total protection, as no mortality occurred 2 days after the experimental infection with V....
